God Strategies: The Wendigo

When you play Masters of Myth™ and are looking through a new deck, you’re probably trying to figure out what cards are the strongest. It might not be immediately clear what powerful combos you can pull off until you get more familiar with the deck. This guide is designed to help players who are new to The Wendigo, or those who are looking for new strategies to implement.

Terrifying Echoes

Being able to attack once is great, but what about “second attack”? Terrifying Echoes is unique amongst additional attack cards, allowing for the effect to be triggered consistently and target any friendly minion. This is an incredibly versatile feat, allowing The Wendigo’s minions to deal more damage to enemy gods or clear the board of enemy minions. Not-So-Right-Deer and higher power Skinwalkers are excellent targets for this feat. Not-So-Right-Deer in particular, since with Devout, it can create huge devotion swings.

Terrifying Echoes earns its moniker when used with other rituals, like Psychosis. When a Not-So-Right-Deer is affected by both feats, it can destroy a 2-power or less minion, deal 3 damage to an enemy god, and gain the Wendigo 5 Devotion. This combo can very easily shift the momentum of a game and give The Wendigo the advantage.

Murder of Crows

We here at You’re Close! Gaming love our mythical birds and have included one in almost every deck we’ve produced. Each is a bothersome minion that demands your attention once they are played. Murder of Crows is no exception. It’s expensive for a minion and lacks impressive power. However, it has Guard and one of the most despicable feats we have ever put on a minion. When it is destroyed, the Wendigo gets to select an enemy minion, and it cannot attack until the start of its next turn. This allows Murder of Crows to stall out multi-minion attacks. Absorbing one hit and then preventing another minion from attacking entirely.

But do you know what makes this card truly evil? If it had Fleet as well. Uncanny Valley is a ritual that gives friendly minions in The Wendigo’s hand Fleet. With this, the Wendigo can surprise its opponents with a bird (just like Quetzalcoatl) that also prevents another minion from attacking. Completely derailing its opponent’s attack plan.

Skinwalker

When your opponent plays a minion with high power, or applies buffs to increase a minion’s power, it’s typically a threat. In the eyes of a Skinwalker, it’s an opportunity. The Skinwalker’s Innate Feat sets its power equal to an enemy minion’s when it is summoned. The Sun Itself is much less terrifying when The Wendigo can use it to create juggernaut Skinwalkers to crush its enemies with. Having several 10-power minions to swing with will give you an immeasurable power trip.

The fun doesn’t end there, because what if you gave it Fleet? Being used alongside Uncanny Valley, a Skinwalker can copy the power of enemy minions at any time, and the best time is when enemy minions are benefiting from temporary power buffs. Western Kami can very easily get to 6-power on Susanoo’s turn, but it goes back down to 2 power on enemy turns. A Skinwalker who copies its power while it’s at 6-power gets to keep that power for as long as it’s on the table.

Just The Wind

Famed line of video game NPCs, Just The Wind punishes passive play. At the end of a God’s attack phase, they will take 1 damage for each minion they control that didn’t attack. Stacking 3 of these effects can be a win condition itself if leveraged properly. The Wendigo has several feats that prevent enemy minions from attacking: its Deathstate God Feat, the Innate Feat on Murder of Crows, and the Innate Feat on Survive the Night. Once these feats are active, opponents are left with a simple choice: find a way to destroy the affected minion without attacking or take the damage from Just The Wind.
